About the Mountain

The Alto de Gominteiro is an Especial category climb located in the Cantabrian mountain ranges in the Asturias region in North West of Spain, neighbouring the mighty Angliru. The climb begins at the town of Pola de Lena. The ascent includes the climb of La Cobertoria and begins once you take the right hand turn onto the minor road leading to the summit of Gamoniteiro.

The Gamoniteiro ascent is made up of almost constant steep ramps at around 10% with only a few sections where the gradient dips to around 8%. From around the 9km mark to summit the gradient is very steep with gradients greater than 10% including 14%, 12% and 17% sections in the final kilometres to the summit. At the summit there is a communications mast which is not the most beautiful thing to see but luckily the surrounding views are.

The Gamoniteiro climb was first used in the Vuelta in 2021 on stage 18 as a summit finish for the mountain stage. The stage was won by Movistar's Miguel Angel Lopez.
