About the Mountain
The St Gotthard Pass summit is reached via the Tremola Road when starting the ascent from Airolo on the South side. The Old Tremola road snakes its way up the mountain with spectacular haipin turns. It is located in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. The road, in part, is made up of sections which are made from large amounts of small granite cobbles. You can't help but wonder how much effort went into making the old Tremola Raod and how they got the granite cobbles up there!
The gradient is steady at around 7-8%. The cobbled sections are well maintained and can be ridden on road bikes easily. The scenery is spectacular with amazing views of the surrounding mountain peaks.
At the summit there is a hotel that was once a hospice. There is also three small lakes located at the summit.
The St Gotthard pass has been used previously in the Tour of Switzerland race. In the 2019 edition of the Tour de Suisse race, the St Gotthard pass is the summit finish of stage 7 The riders will descend the Lukmanierpass at 1915m to Biasca at 341m before ascending to the St Gotthard finish at 2091m.
