About the Mountain
The Alto de Los Machucos climb is located in the Northern part of Spain close to the Spain/France border.
At the beginning of the climb you will be face with a ramp that is more like a wall at 25% gradient. Once you pass this obstacle you come into the forest section that houses the infamous, tight, concrete switchback section that has ramps of 25% plus.
The climb only ceases its rise with about 1km to go where the road takes a very short descent followed by a flat section.
The Alto de Los Machucos is not an overly long climb, distance wise, but the multiple 20%+ sections make the climb very difficult.
The Alto de Los Machucos climb was introduced in the Vuelta in 2017 stage 17. The stage was awarded to 2nd place finisher Alberto Contador after Stefan Denifl was disqulaified. The Alto de Los Machucos was once again used in the 2019 Vuelta, stage 13 as a summit finish. The 2019 stage was won by UAE Team Emirates rider Tadej Pogacar, followed closely by race winner Primoz Roglic, who finished in second place on the stage.
