The final 5km of Val Martello includes several hairpins that in places ramp up to a gradient of 14%.
The Val Martello was used for the first time in the 2014 Giro d'Italia on stage 16. The weather on this stage was very severe with sleet and snow causing harsh conditions for the riders to endure. The stage went over the HC climbs of the Passo Gavia and Passo dello Stelvio before finishing on the summit of the Monte Martello. The stage was won by Nairo Quintana who rode away to finish alone on the Monte Martello summit. Quintana went on to win the Giro d'Italia in 2014.
