About the Mountain
Scotland's Bealach Na Ba, also known as the Aplecross Pass, is located in the Aplecross Peninsula on the West coast of Scotand.
This curvy ascent is the highest road in Scotland.
Although it is located in Scotland it has the feel of an Alpine road with it's tight switchback turns, steep gradient sections and of course spectacular scenery. Large vistas of neighbouring peaks and lochs can be seen to urge you to carry on to see what the next vista will be. Be mindful that road is reduced to a single track in parts.
There are sections with gradients above 15% in parts, and as such it is considered to be the toughest cycling climb in scotland and also the uk.
Due to Scotland's ever changing weather it can be closed in winter months due to snow, with snow gates at either end of the road's pass.
Some of the steepest sections are located near the summit so be prepared for the final sting to the legs that awaits before you reach your goal.
With an elevation gain of 626m over a distance of 9.2km and an average gradient of 6.8% Bealach Na Ba is definitely a challenge worthy of any cyclists best efforts. The Bealach Na Ba was used by Scotland's Mark Beaumont, current around the world cycling record holder, as a training ground for his epic round the world cycling endeavours.
