About the Mountain
Mount Baldy is often the penultimate climb in the Tour of California race. The climb is located on the outskirts of Los Angeles with the climb beginning from Ontario via Mt Baldy Road. The climb covers a distance of around 15km with an average gradient of 7.8%. The climb has haipin turns nearer the top of the mountain where it climbs up to the Ski lifts and resort area at an elevation of just under 2000m. The climb is steep with sections above 15%.
The Mt Baldy climb often decides the overall GC winner of the Tour of California and is usually featured on the penultimate stage of the Tour of California race.
The lower part of the climb is very open and exposed with little shelter, while the higher, second part of the climb offers a little more shade and covered areas courtesy of the beautiful local trees.
