The road surface is good and is a welcome companion to the cycling climber. Natural beauty that is all around continues up to Mt Goliath natural area located 16.4miles into the Mount Evans climb. Not very long after Mt Goliath there is a 10% gradient section. The tree line ends around this area.
The next landmark is Summit Lake located 22.6 miles into the climb at 3911m elevation.
The total length of the Mount Evans climb is 43km. The distance means that the average gradient for the climb is only 4.4% but dont under estimate the climb as the total elevation, thinner air and constant climbing makes Mount Evans a formidable opponent.
The Mount Evans hill climb cycling event was founded in 1962 and takes place annualy each July. The record for the fastest ascent at the event is held by former pro cyclist, Tom Danielson at 1hour 41mins 20secs.
