About the Mountain
Singapore, a largely flat country, is not the first destination you think of in relation to mountain cycling but it does have a small but perfectly formed gem, Mount Faber. The climb is short but it does pack a steep sting to test the legs. Once you reach the summit you can continue down and back up around the Mt Faber loop road, which brings you back to the summit. Another dimension to this climb is the heat. Singapore, being tropical, means that you will be making the ascent in hot and very humid tropical conditions, no matter what time of the day. Cycling up Mt Faber's roads surrounded by tropical vegetation, the noises of surrounding wildlife in the hummidity is all in all a rewarding experience.
The local coffee in Singapore, called Kopi, available in local Hawker Centres should not be missed. It is made with condensed milk and/or evaporated milk and very different to European style coffee. It does pack a punch and is excellent fuel for riding. Neighbouring Malaysia offers some excellent mountain roads in the Cameron Highlands area.
