About the Mountain
The climb of the Col du Granon starts at the commune of Saint Chaffrey which is at the foot of the climb. The first 5 kilometres of the climb consists of shorter ramps punctuated with hairpin turns. Around the 5 kilometre mark, the road becomes more open and longer with a hairpin turn just before the 9 kilometre mark that again changes the direction.
The Col du Granon ascent tops out at 2413m with an avergare gradient of 9.2%. The climb is approx 11km in distance. The steepest sections are located between kilometres 5 and 8, and at kilometres 9 to 11. The ascent is very difficult due to the combination of disatnce, altitude gain and prolonged sections of steep gradients.
The Col du Granon featured in the famous Tour de France of 1986 where Greg Lemond beat his team mate Brenard Hinault.
The Col du Granon was used for the second time in the 2022 Tour de France where it was the summit finish on stage 11. Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic of Team Jumbo Visma continually attacked Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates, who was in yellow, to eventually allow Vingegaard to ride away solo on the col du Granon, gain the yellow jersey and subsequently win the Tour.
