About the Mountain

The Mont du Chat is located in the Jura mountain range in France. The climb from Saint Paul is really punishing with a continuous gradient above 7% kilometre after kilometre. There are sections of 14% and 15% gradient. At the summit of the Mont du Chat is a cafe and a telecommunications tower. The closest airport and train station are both located in Chambery

The Mont du Chat was the final climb on stage 9 of the 2017 Tour de France. On the ascent, as Chris Froome in yellow, raised his hand for service, Fabio Aru attacked closely followed by Nairo Quintana. This attack never continued and the favourites regrouped. The riders descended down from the summit of the Mont du Chat to the finish at Chambrey. On the descent Richie Porte hit the grass verge at the side of the road and was flung across the road into a wall of rock on the other side of the road after also colliding with Dan Martin before slamming into the wall of rock. This crash ended Richie Porte's tour but Dan Martin was able to carry on.

The stage was eventually won by Rigoberto Uran, even although he was stuck in a very large gear after experiencing issues with his derailleur.
