About the Mountain
The Piancavallo climb is located in the Italian Dolomites mountains range. The climb begins in Aviano at 159m above sea level and climbs up to the ski resort at Piancavallo at 1290m gaining 1131m in a distance of around 14km.
The climb has many steep gradient sections where the gradient goes between 9% and 14%. When the gradient falls back to 8%, this feels like a respite. The bottom part of the climbs contain many sections around the 8/9%
At around the 7km mark there is a section that reaches 14% with the second half of the climb still to come.
The Piancavallo climb has been used several times previously in the Giro d'Italia. It was used in the 2017 Giro stage 19 and was won by Spain's Mikel Landa riding for Movistar. In the 1998 Giro d'Italia, stage 14 Marco Pantani, riding for the Mercatone Uno Bianchi team, rode away to take the victory on Piancavallo. Pantani went on to win the Giro d'Italia in 1998. The Piancavello ascent is the summit finish of stage 15 in the 2020 Giro d'Italia.
The closest train station is located in Aviano at the foot of the climb.
